Present Simple Tense for Future with examples and formation. The Present Simple Tense can be used to describe future events that are scheduled, planned or arranged. This is sometimes called the ‘Present Simple for Future’ tense. It is commonly used to talk about timetables, schedules, and events that occur in the near future.

Formation

To form the present simple tense for future, we use the present tense of the verb ‘to be’ (am, is, are) followed by the infinitive of the main verb without ‘to’. The subject can be any noun, pronoun or it can be implied.

Examples

  • The train leaves at 7 pm tonight. (Here, “leaves” is the present simple tense of “leave” and used to talk about a future event.)
  • The movie starts in an hour.
  • My flight arrives at noon tomorrow.
  • The concert begins at 8 pm on Friday.
  • The shop opens at 9 am every day.
  • The class ends at 3 pm today.
  • The bus departs in ten minutes.
  • The party starts at 7 pm tomorrow.
  • The meeting begins at 10 am sharp.
  • The store closes at 9 pm every night.

Note: In this tense, we use adverbs of time like “tomorrow”, “next week”, “tonight” etc. to indicate that the action is happening in the future.
